Honua‘ula

On January 4th,
nearly two hundred residents of south Maui showed their support
for Honua 'ula by attending the County Council Land Use Committee
public meeting on this project. Forty people testified with nearly
all of them in support of the project praising the attributes of
affordable housing, mixed use development, infrastructure support
and the positive approach of public input into the design of the
project.
Wailea 670 Associates,
developer of the proposed 670-acre Honua‘ula project, believes
that the success of our island’s economy lies in establishing
partnerships and planning with long-term vision.
Here
are the top 10 reasons why people have voiced their support for
this project:

Project area is currently designated for growth as Project District
9 in the Kihei Community Plan. |

The Project
is consistent with the Community Plan |
| |

| 3. |
The Project
will not rely upon water supplied by the County of Maui and will therefore
not impact the current source issues facing Maui County |
| |

| 4. |
The Project
has taken a leadership role in obtaining funding and designing the
improvements to the Piilani Highway. |
| |
|
| 5. |
Parks within
the greater Kihei area will benefit from the park fees derived from
the Project and make possible the development of regional park facilities
to serve the families of Kihei. Park facilities will also be provided
within the Project. |

The Project embraces
many of the attributes of “smart growth” by incorporating
commercial, residential, recreational and open space elements within
the Project. |

The overall
residential density of the Project will be less than surrounding properties
and be set at a maximum of 2.1 dwellings per acre. |

A maximum unit
count will be limited to 1400 dwelling units. |

needs such as a police substation, fire department and post office
in the Wailea/Makena area. |

will have a twenty-year build out allowing for the gradual absorption
of population and development of infrastructure to be addressed on

of the Project takes place in an area which is appropriate for housing

treating waste water for use on landscaping and the golf course and

master plan for the Project will improve the near shore water quality
